Moving Forward

Moving Forward

After posting issue 10, it came to my attention that you guys had some questions about Bean and Void, like "Why does Void looks like she does?" and about her design change half-way through. At first, I had thought a Q&A post would help answer them while also making it more public knowledge. But after taking a look at the series as a whole, I've decided that maybe, this might not be the best approach. There will be issues in the future that are going to answer some of these questions, and I don't want to ruin the surprise.

Here are some of the questions I can answer though:

Why does Void look like that?

This question refers to how Void shifts colors and is sometimes transparent. Void is a spirit entity of a cat, made out of stardust and space energy. She can solidify and be seen by others, but she can also hold a ghost like presence, becoming transparent and float in the air. This is really hard to depict on paper, as you have probably noticed. That brings us to the next question,

-

Why did Void's character design change?

Because Void is basically space energy, her first couple of appearances show her with her skull visible. This is because she housed herself and held a physical form using the skull. Kind of like a hermit crab and a shell. She was also fluffy cause I love fluffy kitties. But as I continued to draw her like that, I realized that it was more difficulty than it was worth to have that be her primary form. The lines bled into each other too much and the image started to become muddy from the detailing.

So, I made a sacrifice in detailing and changed to a simpler overall design. I do miss her fluffy tail though. It only added to her sassy attitude. She might have a couple more changes, but for now I am happy where she is currently at.

What exactly is Bean?

He is a frog. And that's all y'all are getting right now, a supernatural frog.

-

Why is Bean so small? Also, why does his proportions change from time to time?

He is small. I am also working out his character designing too. I've come to learn that's normal. Art changes as you change as a person. It only makes sense that your characters improve as you do. Hence why is pupil design changed slightly. That middle line became a real unnecessary detail that made his facial expressions muddy in certain perspectives.

-

What Artists have influenced my own?

Jhonen Vasquez and iLL WiLL Press are probably my main artistic influences when it comes to character design and storytelling. Growing up with Bob Ross and Tomas Kinkade has made a big impact regarding my background and landscaping pieces. But my greatest influence has been Stan Lee. He was a true hero for the people and his work will live on forever. It only makes sense to try and bring that with me.

What is my favorite depiction of Bean?

These are my favorite pictures of Bean.

Bean is the coolest thing ever and what better to depict that, than a picture of him wearing glasses and eating popcorn?

Bean is always so curious and fascinated by everything! But his expression in this picture has always felt like the most Bean like thing ever. It's always the classics that last forever in our hearts, rent free.

Adding Descriptions

Some of the other questions I've received have been regarding the material itself. After taking a look at my previous posts, I've realized there are a few things I could do different so they can be more easily understood. So before posting this, I have gone back to edit each issue with a description of the comic. Hopefully this helps answer any questions about what's going on.

I would also like to note here that just because its canon, I still encourage you to come up with your own interpretation and take what works for you. The whole message behind the Bean and Void series is finding hope and understanding, while finding the light in tough situations. Also, humor is great medicine for the soul. If you find something that wasn't there before and it helps you or makes you smile, I would love to hear about it!

Facebook Group

Finally, to address the behind-the-scenes questions like what I use to make my material or what the process looks like, off the page. Look at you Beanies wanting to be so involved and curious. I want to hear from you guys too! That stuff can easily get buried when it's mixed in with everything else though. Fear not though! I have an idea.

I have made a private group where you Beanies can go to see all the behind-the-scenes stuff and ask questions like that more freely. I will also be sharing other pieces of art there as well. I want to make this my full-time job. That is my dream. I also want you to reach yours and if you want to learn from watching me or you just think that kind of stuff is cool, the private group would be the best place to do so. If you would like an invite, just hit me up with a message and let me know.

---  ---  ---  --- ---

I know, I know. I said there was a Q&A coming. But let's be honest. This solution is pretty cool, better than just posting a Q&A, and it adds more stability for future progression. I would also like to take this time to share how the material will be changing moving forward. There will be times that the material will get heavy. The series will be addressing subject matters regarding depression, anxiety and will depict dark themes. It's not going to be for everyone. If it's not for you, that's fine. I wish you the best. But for those who do stay, Thank you.
